The main difference is the number of joints

Standard uPVC guttering is supplied in short factory-made lengths connected along the roofline. Those connectors make installation flexible, but seals can shrink, move or collect debris over time.

Seamless aluminium guttering is roll-formed at the property to the required length. Corners, outlets and downpipes are still necessary, but the long straight runs do not need a connector every few metres.

Appearance and strength

Aluminium produces a crisp, consistent line and does not become brittle in the way ageing plastic can. It will not rust, and it is well suited to long elevations where repeated connectors would be noticeable.

A good uPVC system can still be suitable for a small repair, garage or short roofline. The important point is to compare the complete installed job—including supporting fascias, outlets and downpipes—not just the price of a length of gutter.

What should be checked before either system is fitted?

New guttering can only perform properly when it has secure fixings, the right fall and enough outlets for the roof area. Covering rotten timber with new material does not solve the underlying weakness.

  • Condition of the fascia and roof edge
  • Length, pitch and drainage area of the roof
  • Position and capacity of outlets and downpipes
  • Corners, extensions and lower roofs that concentrate water
  • Safe access around the property

Which system is right for your property?

Seamless aluminium is particularly attractive for homeowners wanting fewer main-run joints, a tailored finish and a durable full replacement. Sectional plastic may remain sensible for a very small isolated repair where the rest of the system is sound.

A site survey is the best way to avoid paying for the wrong solution. We measure the roofline, check the supporting boards and provide a written quotation for the work actually required.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does seamless guttering have no joints at all?

The straight main runs are formed continuously, but every gutter system still needs properly sealed corners, stop ends and outlets where the design requires them.

Can aluminium guttering replace existing plastic?

Yes. The old system can be removed and replaced after the fascia, fall, outlets and fixing points have been checked.

Will aluminium guttering rust?

Aluminium does not rust. Like any roofline system, it should still be kept clear and checked if water starts overflowing.
